Wilderness First Aid (Blended) 10-22-2023, Belmont
This is our blended learning Wilderness First Aid course. You will be required to take an online course with self assessment questions and a comprehensive online exam. This is followed by a full day of hands on field experience. Completion of both elements results in a Wilderness First Aid Certification.
CPR/AED (Blended) 10-22-2023, Belmont
Basic Adult CPR/AED designed to meet OSHA standards. This course prepares the student for resuscitation cases that occur within normal Emergency Medical System (EMS) response areas. You will need to take an online course before demonstrating your skills.
Course Types
Blended Learning (Online, Practicum)
Our preferred offering is a style we call blended learning. Blended learning courses begin with a student learning the academic portions of the material in a directed combination of text reading and online lectures, video, and interactive testing. This is followed by a “Practicum” where the student demonstrates skills competency in one or more sessions with an instructor. Blended learning allows the student to control the pace and timing of the academic portion of the course. In most of our blended learning courses the “Practicum” is all completed in one day.
Traditional
We also offer traditional courses where an instructor covers the academic materials in a classroom setting. In this form practical hands on demonstrations are combined with the lecture to create the necessary knowledge and skills set. This is followed by a “Practicum” where the student demonstrates skills competency in one or more sessions with an instructor.
Challenge
Where the certification standards allow we also offer challenge courses. These courses are only available to students who have prior training/certification in the course materials. In a challenge course we allow students to take a qualifying exam and, if they pass, to demonstrate practical skills in a Practicum with the instructor. We do not concern ourselves with where or how the student learned, only with their skills and knowledge being above the threshold for the certification. Many re-certifications are essentially challenge courses.

Extended Care/Back Country
Wilderness First Aid (Blended, Traditional, Challenge)
This is our flagship course. It introduces the student to the skills necessary to provide First Aid in an extended care situation. Although originally intended to address the back country and expedition leader’s First Aid needs, it is also useful for those in isolated environments. We use a Steps to Case Resolution approach that starts with preparedness and extends from situation assessment through treatment to evacuation. The focus is on leadership, team, skills and improvisation.
This course covers all the material of the American Red Cross, ASHI and ECSI Wilderness First Aid courses, and meets the current (2010 revision) Boy Scouts of America standards for high adventure activities and high adventure bases. It can also be expanded to meet specific student needs by adding additional modules. These include topics such as triage, packaging for transport, overland transport systems, rigging for rescues, communications, improvised litters and stretchers, and dealing with environment or situation specific risks.
The blended learning class consists of eight hours of independent online course work and one day of hands-on training including a half day of practicum scenarios. The traditional class consists of two very long training days including a half day of practicum scenarios. Students with previous experience may earn a new or re-certification by passing an online or on-site written exam and by demonstrating adequate skills in field scenarios.

Marine
Properly Prepared to Sail (Traditional)
When you take in your lines and head for open water, just how ready are you? The chances are you are “book” ready and prepared to handle everything as long as things go right. But, how ready are you if things go wrong? How good are your First Aid, Communications, Seamanship, and Navigation skills? How good is your equipment? How good do they need to be? Do your skills and equipment match your needs? Will they meet your needs if things go wrong? Too much preparation is a waste of time and money. Too little can cost you your life. This seminar will discuss trip risks and probabilities and then provide a check list that helps you make informed decisions as you strike a balance between too little and too much preparation. At the end you should have a much better idea of how to get yourself Properly Prepared to Sail.

Post Disaster
CERT First Aid
This online-only course is for CERT members with basic First Aid training. It increases the student’s expertise in maladies and treatments most often encountered after a large area natural disaster or a breakdown in civil society. Although primarily focused on the needs of a CERT member during their initial survey (especially where professional help will be delayed) the course also touches on public health issues such as water purification and improvised care.

Post Disaster First Aid (Blended)
This course is for CERT members with basic First Aid training. Using a mixture of online coursework and hands-on scenarios, for greater depth than available in our CERT First Aid class, it increases the student’s expertise in maladies and treatments most often encountered after a large area natural disaster or a breakdown in civil society. Although primarily focused on the needs of a CERT member during their initial survey (especially where professional help will be delayed) the course also deals with extended periods without professional response. Topics include immediate First Aid (trauma, illness), extended care, and public health issues (water, waste, disease). This is an adaptation of our flagship Wilderness First Aid course with core ideas applied to times when the normal Emergency Medical System (EMS) is overwhelmed or unresponsive, rather than delayed.
